During Halloween weekend, members of the New Trier Sailing JV and Varsity teams traveled to Madison, Wisconsin, home of the University of Wisconsin, to participate in the advanced racing clinic hosted by the University’s sailing team. On Friday night the team squeezed into two cars and made the trip up Madison. After initially walking into the wrong house, we found the correct Air B&B. Later that night we enjoyed a late night snack at the Flannel Frontier, where we enjoyed a fun game of darts and an excellent selection of music.
Saturday morning we made our way to Lake Mendota. After enjoying breakfast provided by the UW Sailing team, we spent the morning doing rabbit starts and practicing boat handling. Wind was around 10 knots, and conditions were slightly choppy. Arrieta Angueira Salbidegoitia ‘22, Casey Bertocchi ‘22, Will Broseman ‘22 and Lucy Elvart ‘24 sailed FJs. Santiago Benes ’24, Madeline Epps ’23, Preston Levy ’24, Lilly Lipford ’24, Cal Lutton ’22, Ava Pankuauskas ’24, Carl Rehbock ’23, Izzy Rietz ’23, David Szymanski 24 and Ann Tokoyoda ’24 all sailed E420s. We came in for lunch and enjoyed pizza before going back out and racing all afternoon. After sailing, we enjoyed a team dinner on campus.
Sunday we raced all morning. It was 15 knots gusting to 20, and again choppy. We came in for lunch and listened to a presentation about college sailing at UW. The decision was made to not to go back out in the afternoon due to the high winds, so we spent the afternoon in small group chalk talks. Afterwards we were given a tour of the campus by members of the UW sailing team before driving back home.
Congrats to Cal Lutton ´22 and Carl Rehbock ´23 for placing second in the Sunday scrimmages! And thanks to the University of Wisconsin sailing team for hosting and to Izzy’s and Ann’s moms for driving and chaperoning.
