Eligibility

2017-18 New Trier Sailing Team

Any student enrolled or eligible to be enrolled at New Trier High School may try out for the team.  Tryouts are typically held in August.  Sailors interested in joining for the spring season should contact us to inquire about space and to arrange an evaluation.

New Trier Sailing is a “learn-to-race” team, not a “lean-to-sail” team.  Those trying out should already know how to sail, but a lack of prior racing experience is not necessarily disqualifying.  If you have questions, please review our FAQs.

Fall Tryouts (in August)

Both new and returning sailors must attend a mandatory pre-season clinic and tryout at the Chicago Yacht Club in August. Contact us to register or with any questions or concerns..

Those attending tryouts are required to wear a Type III Coast Guard Approved PFD (life jacket).  In addition, they should wear closed toe shoes, sailing boots or booties.  A towel, a complete change of clothes, water bottle and sunscreen are also recommended.  Synthetic fabrics are preferred over cotton, as cotton does not dry quickly or provide warmth when wet.  Sailing gloves, spray gear, hats and sunglasses attached by lanyard, and other sailing gear can be worn but are not required.  Depending on conditions, it is possible that the sailor may end up in the water at some point, so plan accordingly.

Prior to the New Trier tryout and clinic, the Chicago Yacht Club runs two sessions of “high school pipeline” training each summer.  Participation is not mandatory to try out for New Trier Sailing, but is highly recommended for those without significant racing experience, who want extra time and instruction to brush up on their skills, or who want to get familiar with the 420 sailboats used in high school sailing.

Team Selection and Kickoff Meeting

New Trier Sailing will field two teams following tryouts:  Varsity and Junior Varsity.  Each team will be approximately 16 sailors.  Of the approximately 32 total sailors, normally 20-25 are returning team members. All assignments and selections are made exclusively by the coaching staff at the Chicago Yacht Club.

Sailors that make the New Trier Sailing team and their parents are required to attend an information meeting the Monday after the team roster is announced.
