Here are some updates on practices and tryouts for New Trier Sailing 2021-22.
First, pre-season optional practice will run August 23-26 at CYC Belmont from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm daily. It is open to last year’s varsity sailors. Incoming freshmen who think they have enough sailing experience to try out for varsity this year can email Head Coach Hector Guzman (guzman@chicagoyachtclub.org) to ask to participate. There will be no bus for these sessions, so sailors will need to get there on their own.
The first day of regular practice is still set for September 7, 2021.
Tryouts remain as scheduled for August 31 and September 1, also from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Students will be evaluated on the following skillsets: rigging, starts, mark roundings, upwind technique, downwind technique, overall boat-handling, punctuality, teamwork, leadership, and coachability.
New this year, because everyone who tries out will be assigned to a team, CYC will require registration for the program before tryouts take place. Registration for the program is now open at: https://theclubspot.com/register/camp/xeXmY4yYiv/class. When registering, sailors will have to choose HIGH SCHOOL DOUBLE-HANDED SCHOLASTIC SAILING (and then Varsity or Junior Varsity) or SONAR SERIES (what was previously referred to as “development” or “learn-to-sail”). Returning sailors should choose what they were last year. Incoming students should choose the level in which they think they belong. Those new to sailing should choose Sonar Series. CYC will reorganize the teams after tryouts, so what you register for will not determine where you will end up. (CYC advises that it will refund fees for anyone that decides not to go forward after finding out where they are placed.) Registering after August 30 will prompt a $75 late fee.
As in the past, all sailors will have to be registered with CYC and in their system. Sailors will receive an e-mail with more information on that shortly after they register. If you don’t get one, check your spam filter.
The CYC Foundation offers SAILING EDUCATION GRANTS to assist with costs of high school sailing for sailors whose families need financial assistance in order to participate. If possible, interested students and families should apply by August 15, 2020, in order that grants can be awarded prior to the registration deadline.
