This May, 7 New Trier sailors traveled to Cleveland, OH, for the MISSA Mallory Qualifier Regatta. George Barton ’22, Casey Bertocchi ’22, Emil Body-Goldberg ’23, Will Broseman ’22, Quin Doughty ’21, Lucy Elvart ’24, and Cal Lutton ’22, along with Walter Payton College Prep, St. Ignatius College Prep, and Latin School of Chicago all were at the two-day weekend regatta. It took place on Lake Erie at the Foundry, Cleveland’s rowing and sailing center.
On the first day of the qualifier, winds were light and shifty but slowly built later in the afternoon, although remaining variable. The temperature remained steady in the 60s. Although difficult, the Race Committee was still able to get in a few sets, with a short break to let a freighter pass through the race course. Pairings were George and Lucy in A Division and Quin and Will in B Division. For dinner that evening, we went to the nautical-themed Sixth City Sailor’s Club and then to Colossal Cupcakes for dessert.
The wind picked up a little for the second day after a brief period of postponement but remained shifty throughout the afternoon. Pairings were George and Lucy in A Division and Cal and Casey in B Division. For the last set, Quin and Emil sailed a couple of races. Overall, the team was able to sail nine sets throughout the weekend. Thank you to Mr. Elvart and Mr. Bertocchi for chaperoning and driving us to Cleveland.
