MISSA Girls in Grosse Pointe

This past weekend, nine sailors went to the MISSA Girls’ Regatta in Grosse Pointe, Michigan in two tams. New Trier Green had Alex and Sarah sailing in A division and Anna and Casey in B division.  New Trier Blue had Quin and India competing in A division and Molly and Moriah in B division, with Ally as an alternate. Sailors arrived in Michigan on Friday night after getting out of school early to stay at Sarah’s grandmother’s house. On Saturday morning, the regatta began at Grosse Pointe Yacht club with moderate winds around fourteen knots and medium chop. The lake that we sailed on, Lake Saint Clair, was very puffy and there were many shifts throughout the day. At the end of the day, New Trier Green was eighth out of ten boats and New Trier Blue was tenth. On Sunday, the conditions were even more variant. For some races, it felt like there was almost no wind, but for others, it was upwards of twenty knots. The course had to be moved many times and sailors had to remain very alert to affectively gage the conditions.

Overall, New Trier Blue came in tenth and New Trier Green came in seventh. Quin and India got tenth in their division, as did Moriah, Molly, and Ally. Alex and Sarah got eighth in their division, and Casey and Anna got second in their division, only five points away from being in first. While we didn’t qualify to go to San Diego, the regatta certainly was a great experience. Thank you to Mrs. Rode and Mr. Trunsky for chaperoning, and especially to Sarah’s grandmother for letting us stay in her lovely house and being so welcoming to all of us.
