For the final regatta of the Fall 2021 season, the New Trier sailing team competed in the Great Lakes Championship. The event was run by the Chicago Yacht Club and held at Monroe Station, simultaneously with the Shepherd Championship run by Columbia Yacht Club. We competed against the top twenty schools in the Midwest, all of whom had previously qualified for the event.
On Saturday, after a breakfast run to Stan’s Donuts, George Barton ‘22 and Lucy Elvart ‘24 sailed in A division while Caroline McClain ‘24 and Will Broseman ‘22 sailed in B. On Sunday, after yet another Stan’s run, Arrieta Angueira Salbidegoitia ‘22 and Will Broseman ‘22 sailed in A division while Cal Lutton ‘22 and Casey Bertocchi ‘22 sailed in B division.
On both days of the regatta, we were faced with challenging conditions and stiff competition. The wind was very patchy and shifty coming from the southwest. We spent both days trying to figure out the course geometry and whether or not it is possible to swim in the water in the St. Regis building. Caroline McClain and Will Broseman finished a race in first place! While we had many difficult races, we learned a lot throughout the event. Thank you to Chicago Yacht Club for hosting and to Coaches Hector and Addie for coaching us.
