As a reminder, the tryouts for the 2023 Fall Season will take place at the Chicago Yacht Club Belmont Station (on the south side of Belmont Harbor) on Monday, August 21 AND Tuesday, August 22 from approximately 4 to 7 PM**. Wednesday, August 23 will be used as a make-up day. Bus service will be provided for tryouts and will pick up sailors on the south side (Winnetka Rd entrance) of New Trier East. Due to the early school release schedule on Monday, the bus will pick students up at 3:00 PM. Tuesday and Wednesday bus pick-up will be in the same location (Winnetka Rd entrance), but after school at 3:30 PM. Freshman should plan to take the first shuttle bus that leaves NT West to meet the sailing bus at the NT East campus. All students trying out need to pre-register with CYC for the season PRIOR to showing up for tryouts. In addition, please make sure that you complete the separate NTS registration that is all described on the Fall 2023 Registration page.
All sailors must wear closed-toed shoes and a life jacket to tryouts. Sailors should also bring water, sunscreen, a hat, and a snack. During tryouts, sailors will be evaluated on the following skillsets: rigging, starts, mark roundings, upwind technique, downwind technique, overall boat-handling, punctuality, teamwork, leadership, and coachability.
**For returning sailors – please note that if you are on the exempted list (shared via TeamSnap on August 2), you do not need to attend tryouts. If you are not on the exempted list, you must tryout to determine your team placement. Exempted sailors have generally been on varsity a couple semesters and have experience in sailing in bigger regattas.
The first day of regular practice is scheduled to kick off after Labor Day on Tuesday, September 5, 2023. As in years past, JV and Sonar practice will continue to be on Mondays and Wednesdays and Varsity on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 4 – to 7 PM. Bus service will be provided for JV/Sonar practices and TBD for Varsity (dependent on finalized roster).
