Traverse City Team Race

Ted Lutton '20 and Sammy Stoeber '20 halfway through a roll tack

This weekend, some of our Varsity “B” Sailors and JV sailors traveled to Traverse City, Michigan. On Saturday we started off our day with Opti relay races using dagger boards for paddles until the wind filled in. With six to eight knots and flat water, we were able to complete one entire round robin of team racing, leaving our New Trier Blue team in second with five wins and one loss. Rather than winning a trophy, New Trier won a cookie cake, which the team enjoyed sharing at the end of the day while debriefing with Coach Katy (a friend of Dave Gerber’s). On Sunday we sailed all morning with Coach Katy. With sailable wind and a sunny day, we worked on starts, team racing maneuvers, and tacks/jibes. We were so thankful to have both of the Lutton parents as well as Mr. Kleinman to help with travel, meals, and team support! Traverse City was a great way to bring our Varsity and Junior Varsity teams together and work on team racing.
