Saturday started out with a pretty big breeze; high teens from the east that brought some rollers in. Temperatures hovered in the 40s and it began to rain at about 2 PM. Sunday was a very different type of racing as the wind lightened up a lot and the water calmed to be almost flat. The weather was a vast improvement over Saturday with blue skies and temperature in the 50s.
The regatta consisted of the three divisions: MISSA Tier 2 (qualifying for the Great Lakes Championship and the Atlantic Coast Championship), MISSA Tier 3 “Open” (junior varsity level), and a Laser Radial division.
Aidan Lane ’20 competed in the Laser Radial division winning nearly every race, port tacking the fleet, and taking home a victory for New Trier.
The open division consisted of two non-rotating New Trier teams, Markus Tam ‘20 and Nate Zweig ‘22, and Cal Lutton ‘22 and Peter Smith ‘21. Amit Patel ‘21 came to the team’s rescue after Nate couldn’t sail Saturday. Both teams put up numerous top five finishes. On Sunday both teams performed well on the course to round out an exciting weekend.
The MISSA Tier 2 sailors were Garrett Cook ’20 with Anna McBride ’20 in A division, and Ted Lutton ’20 with Alex Adams ’20 and Sammy Stoeber ’20 in B division. The team ended Saturday with a 30 point lead in first, which the team extended to 50 points on Sunday. Ted Lutton ’20 fell out of the boat in the last race, but Alex Adams ’20 made a speedy recovery and they ended up finishing second in the race. The team took victory sail in from the very left-favored course all packed in one boat to celebrate qualifying for the Atlantic Coast Championship.
Thanks to Lake Forest for holding a great event. Five of our sailors will be heading to Toms River, NJ for the Atlantic Coast Championship on November 9 and 10.
