A WORD ABOUT TRYOUTS AND SPRING SAILING:

Spring sailing is more competitive than Fall because both fleet and team racing National qualifiers take place early in the season. Conditions are more challenging due to the cold water and air temperatures, and potential for high winds. Tryouts for returning sailors will be held during the first week to assign sailors to either Varsity, Junior Varsity or Development squad. No new sailors will be accepted this spring unless a sailor has prior 420 racing experience and receives coach approval. Unless a number of returning JV sailors decide not to sail, the coaches will most likely not be moving more than one or two sailors up from the Development team this spring.

GEAR REQUIREMENTS:

Drysuits*

US Coast Guard Approved Type III Life Jackets

Dinghy Boots

Winter Sailing Gloves

Spraytop

Spray Pants

Layers (fleece, polartech, performance fabrics-no cotton)

Winter Hat (non-cotton)

Socks (Neoprene, Wool)

*Drysuits (about $500) are required for spring sailing due to the cold water and air temps. Please check drysuits carefully for holes that need repair. If necessary, the coaches can provide repair information. Suits must be sent out and may take a month or more to repair. Chicago Yacht Club does have a few drysuits to loan to new sailors during tryouts or in emergency situations. As the weather warms up, sailors will transition to spray gear.

FEES:

Chicago Yacht Club spring fees (to be paid after tryouts):

Varsity and Junior Varsity $450 for non-CYC members, $400 for members

Development (Sat only) $200

New Trier Sailing team fees (to be paid after tryouts): total estimated cost = $250

spring fee to cover yard signs, senior burgees, end-of-year party, team t’s etc. $50

DEAR PROSPECTIVE AND RETURNING SAILORS,

Unfortunately, the scheduled new sailor open house for this Sunday has been cancelled due to traffic and parking concerns at Belmont related to the Air and Water Show and a large regatta. We encourage anyone who is not familiar with our sailing venue at Chicago Yacht Club, Belmont Harbor to visit on their own simply to see where we sail. All interested sailors are invited to attend the Kick-Off meeting on Monday, August 29th, 7-8:30 @ the Wilmette Public Library on the corner of Wilmette and Park Ave. Feel free to arrive as early at 6:45. A new sailor Q & A will be held at the end of the meeting (8-8:30 pm) to answer questions and discuss required gear etc… Below is a quick overview of the season:

Fall Kick-Off Meeting on Monday, August 29th 7-8:30 pm @ the Wilmette Public Library (lower level) for both returning and new sailors. This meeting is mandatory for all sailors and a parent to attend. Required forms will be completed and collected. For new sailors, team and yacht club fees will not be collected until after tryouts are complete.

Sailing begins September 6th after school 3:30-7:30/7:45 (includes bus travel time)

Tryouts for Varsity, JV and Development team to be held the first week of the season.

Practice Schedule is: JV and Varsity T-Th (3:30-7:45), Sat (10-4), Varsity only Wed (3:30-730), Development Sat only (10-4). Bus will be provided Tues and Thurs only.

The fall calendar can be found on www.newtriersailing.com along with other important information in the “About” section regarding the team, required gear and fees.

In the coming days, you will be receiving a Google Survey to get a better idea of your sailing experience and level of interest in fall sailing. Prior to the Kick-Off, we ask that you review our “about” section on www.newtriersailing.com, and consider your interest in trying out for Varsity or Junior Varsity, or starting with the Development squad. The sailing team is a large time commitment and it is important to seriously consider your other extracurricular and academic commitments. As always, we have a large number of interested sailors and the first week of the season will be dedicated to tryouts and team assignments. The team can typically accommodate about 25 sailors on the JV and Varsity combined. However, this number varies depending on level of experience and skipper-crew combinations. For less experienced or less committed sailors, the Development team on Saturdays can be a great starting point!

We look forward to seeing everyone on 8/29 at which time we will discuss team commitment, the fall calendar, transportation, team fees, gear, and collect required forms. In the meantime, feel free to be in touch with questions and share this email with any friends who may have planned on attending the Open House this Sunday. If you are no longer interested in sailing this fall, please let us know via email so that we can remove you from our contact list.

Enjoy the final week of summer,

It’s finally beginning to feel like spring, and yet the spring sailing season will end in a few weeks. Below are some highlights from the past few regattas as well as remainder of the season:

REGATTAS:
Last weekend, New Trier placed 3rd in the MISSA Qualifier Team Race Regatta at the Lake Minnetonka Sailing School in Minnesota. Congratulations to skippers Lizzy H, Will, Mitchell and crews John, Mike, Madeleine, Jessie, Johnny and Gabby, who sailed a competitive regatta against several strong teams and under some extremely challenging conditions. The team qualified for the Atlantic Coast Challenge in Maine this month, although has decided not to attend.
Earlier in April, New Trier placed 6th overall in the MISSA Fleet Race Qualifiers at Columbia Yacht Club, Chicago.
New Trier is currently ranked # 2 in the Midwest for 2011, behind Minnetonka!
Upcoming Regattas: Several regattas will take place over the next few weekends. Coaches have requested sailor availability and rosters will be determined soon. Parent volunteers will be needed once rosters are announced, especially for the Pewaukee Regatta. Please visit www.MISSA.net for NOR’s.
5/14-5/15 IL Coed State Championship, Sheridan Shore Yacth Club, Wilmette
5/21-5/22 Pewaukee May Madness, Pewaukee Lake Sailing School, WI
5/22 Rickover Invitational Regatta, Chicago Yacht Club, Belmont Harbor (Junior Varsity Regatta)
Important Dates:
Last Practice is Saturday, May 21
Team Dinner for sailors and parents is Thursday, May 26 6-8:30 pm (invitation to follow)
Wishing everyone a great end of season and looking forward to seeing you at the end-of-season dinner on May 26th!
It’s also more challenging than fall (and summer) due to the cold water and air temperatures, and potential for high winds. Tryouts are held to assign sailors to either Varsity, Junior Varsity or Development squad. For new sailors with 420 or dinghy racing experience outside of New Trier, the coaches will assess your skills and make an appropriate placement during the first week of the season. For sailors with limited or no sailing experience, the coaches may determine that the Development squad (Saturday only) is the best fit prior to tryouts. As the season progresses, sailors may be moved between squads at the coaches’ discretion.
